Endometriosis

Endometriosis Care in Coogee — Taken Seriously, Finally

Endometriosis is a common but frequently misunderstood condition that affects approximately 1 in 7 Australian women and people assigned female at birth. Despite this, the average time from first symptoms to diagnosis is 7 to 12 years — a delay that causes unnecessary suffering and long-term health impacts. At our Coogee GP clinic, we take endometriosis seriously from your very first appointment.

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus — on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, bowel, or other pelvic structures. This tissue responds to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, causing inflammation, pain, and scarring over time.

Common symptoms include:

- Painful or heavy periods

- Pelvic pain outside of menstruation

- Pain during or after sex

- Pain with bowel movements or urination

- Bloating and fatigue

- Difficulty conceiving

Getting Diagnosed

A clinical diagnosis can often be made based on your symptoms and examination, without requiring immediate surgery. Our GPs follow the Australian Living Evidence Guideline for Endometriosis — developed by RANZCOG and endorsed by the RACGP — to guide assessment and management.

Management Options

There is currently no cure for endometriosis, but effective management can significantly improve quality of life. Options include lifestyle modifications, hormonal therapies (such as the contraceptive pill or hormonal IUD), pain management strategies, referral for specialist gynaecological care or laparoscopic surgery, and support for associated fertility concerns.
