Iron Infusions
Iron Infusions in Coogee — Fast, Effective Treatment for Iron Deficiency
What Is Iron Deficiency?
Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in Australia, particularly affecting women of reproductive age, pregnant women, and people with chronic conditions. When oral iron supplements are not enough — or not tolerated — an intravenous (IV) iron infusion can provide fast, effective relief.
Iron is essential for producing haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. When your iron levels are too low, you may experience:
- Fatigue and low energy
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or headaches
- Pale skin
- Difficulty concentrating
- Cold hands and feet
Many people live with undiagnosed iron deficiency for months before seeking help.
Who May Need an Iron Infusion?
Your GP may recommend an IV iron infusion if you have confirmed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia and oral iron has been ineffective, poorly tolerated, or is not suitable due to a medical condition. Common causes of iron deficiency include heavy periods, pregnancy, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, and chronic bleeding.
What Does an Infusion Involve?
An iron infusion is administered through a drip into a vein, usually over 15 to 60 minutes. You are monitored throughout. Iron infusions are generally well tolerated and most people experience a significant improvement in energy and symptoms within one to two weeks.
