Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (Formally PCOS)
PMOS/PCOS Care in Coogee — Personalised Hormonal Health Support
Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (previously polycystic ovarian syndrome) is one of the most common hormonal conditions in Australia, affecting more than 1 in 8 women of reproductive age — yet up to 70% of cases remain undiagnosed.
PCOS Is Now Called PMOS — And Here's Why It Changed
If you've been living with or searching for information about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), you may have recently heard that the condition has a new name: Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). In May 2026, following a landmark global consensus, PCOS was formally renamed to PMOS.
The old name was misleading. It implied the condition was simply about ovarian cysts, when in fact an increase in ovarian cysts does not mean a woman has PCOS. The new name more accurately reflects what PMOS actually is: a complex, long-term hormonal and metabolic condition affecting more than 170 million women worldwide — more than 1 in 8.
What Does PMOS Mean?
The three components of the new name explain the condition far better:
- Polyendocrine — multiple interacting hormonal disturbances are at the core of the condition, including insulin, androgens, and neuroendocrine hormones
- Metabolic — inherent metabolic features including insulin resistance, weight changes, and increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
- Ovarian — ovulatory disturbances and effects on fertility remain defining features
What are the symptoms of PMOS/PCOS?
Whether you know it as PCOS or PMOS, the symptoms are the same and may include:
- Irregular or absent periods
- Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)
- Acne or oily skin
- Difficulty managing weight
- Thinning hair or hair loss
- Difficulty conceiving
- Mood changes, anxiety, or low mood
Symptoms vary widely between individuals — no two presentations are the same.
Diagnosis and Management of PMOS
Diagnosis is based on a combination of symptoms, hormone blood tests, and ultrasound findings where appropriate.
Management is personalised and may include lifestyle guidance (the most evidence-based first step), hormonal therapies to regulate periods and reduce androgen symptoms, monitoring for associated metabolic conditions, mental health support, and referral to reproductive specialists for fertility concerns.
