Postnatal Care
Postnatal Care in Coogee — Supporting You After Birth
The postnatal period — the weeks and months following birth — can be one of the most joyful yet challenging times in a parent's life. At our Coogee Beach Doctors, we provide compassionate, holistic postnatal care for new mothers, addressing both physical recovery and emotional wellbeing.
Your Six-Week Postnatal Check
The six-week postnatal review is an important milestone for new mothers. During this appointment, your GP will discuss and assess:
- Your physical recovery, including any perineal or caesarean wound healing
- Bladder and bowel function
- Breast health and breastfeeding support
- Fatigue, sleep, and your adjustment to parenthood
- Your emotional health and screening for postnatal depression
- Contraception options going forward
- Your baby's growth and development
Postnatal Depression and Anxiety
Postnatal depression (PND) affects approximately 1 in 7 new mothers in Australia, and postnatal anxiety is similarly common. Symptoms can include persistent low mood, tearfulness, anxiety, difficulty bonding with your baby, and exhaustion beyond the expected tiredness of new parenthood. These are medical conditions — not personal failings — and they are treatable.
Your GP can use validated screening tools to assess your mental health and, if needed, refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist, or perinatal mental health service. A Medicare Mental Health Treatment Plan may entitle you to subsidised psychology sessions.
Ongoing Postnatal Support
Postnatal care doesn't end at six weeks. Our GPs are there to provide ongoing support as you recover, adjust, and grow into parenthood.
